Tropicana going low budget?

In a move that makes sense given today’s economic climate Tropicana Entertainment has hired a Seattle branding company to assist with the move.  Where this gets a little strange is that Tropicana Entertainment doesn’t actually run the Tropicana any more.

Tropicana Entertainment has new management and is trying to convince regulators they are once again capable of holding an Atlantic City casino license.

They have petitioned the state Casino Control Commission to declare them qualified to run the Tropicana, which is to be sold soon at a bankruptcy court auction. The loss of the casino license required the property to be sold to someone else.

The commission has not indicated when it might consider the company’s request.

Since there’s no owners at the moment I guess being aggressive to get control back from the state of New Jersey makes sense.  Maybe the old owners see a bargain to be had here.

Whatever the case, I can’t really see how this concept works.  The Tropicana has undergone many changes to appeal to a younger crowd with shopping, new restaurants and clubs.  I’m not really sure how that can mix with low-budget.  The Newsday article mentions:

Guests complained of filthy hotel rooms, overflowing toilets, bedbugs and roaches, and thick dust. Some slot machine winners also had to endure long waits for jackpot payouts.

If the idea is to improve service and quality of the overall hotel while keeping prices down they should be doing that anyway.  I’ll chalk this up to WTF is happening here and go elsewhere.
